Whether you're conservative, liberal, or somewhere in between — we all want a government that gets things done, treats people fairly, and helps our communities thrive. The Smyth County Democratic Party is committed to building a stronger future for everyone, no exceptions.
Rural families face long drives, long waits, and provider shortages.
Democrats will protect and expand the ACA, defend Medicaid, and invest in rural clinics, community health centers, and mobile care.
We support training and retaining more rural doctors, nurses, and mental-health providers, and keeping prescription costs in check (insulin caps, lower drug prices).
Recent federal cuts to Medicaid funding put rural hospitals and free clinics at risk.
Democrats oppose these cuts and will fight to restore funding, keep people covered, and stabilize rural providers so care isn’t hours away.
Many SWVA counties are “maternity care deserts” with closed Labor & Delivery units, including Smyth County.
Democrats will strengthen maternal care (including extended postpartum coverage), protect reproductive health access, and support rural OB services so moms don’t have to cross county lines to deliver.
The Blue Ridge Job Corps in Marion faces shutdown uncertainty; closing it would hurt local students, workers, and small businesses.
Democrats will expand apprenticeships, Career & Technical Education, and make community college paths more affordable, so students can train here and stay here.
We support career ladders in health care, advanced manufacturing, energy, and the trades, right here in Smyth County.
Dead zones still block homework, telehealth, and small-business growth.
Democrats treat high-speed internet as essential infrastructure: finishing the job of connecting every home and business and restoring affordable service options for low-income families.
Overdose and untreated mental-health needs strain families and employers.
Democrats will expand 988, naloxone access, medication-assisted treatment, school-based counselors, and 24/7 Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics—so help is available when and where it’s needed.
Firearms are part of life here, and so is the expectation of safety.
Democrats back universal background checks to keep guns from dangerous people while respecting responsible ownership.
Distance to jobs, groceries, school, and care is costly when roads and bridges are outdated.
Democrats will keep Bipartisan Infrastructure Law projects flowing in rural communities: fixing roads and bridges, upgrading water systems, and improving safety and reliability.
Smyth County’s economy runs on small employers, family farms, and entrepreneurs.
Democrats will expand access to capital (via SBA/CDFIs), cut junk fees, support local supply chains, protect right-to-repair for farm equipment, and open new markets for value-added agriculture.
Smyth County is home to many veterans who deserve timely, quality medical care and benefits.
Democrats will fully fund VA health care, expand mental-health supports, and uphold our promise of care to toxin-exposed veterans.
